The faults we see most
A furnace that will not turn on is usually a hot-surface igniter, a flame sensor coated in silica, or a pressure switch tripped by a blocked condensate line. A furnace that lights and then shuts down is often an overheating limit switch caused by a clogged filter or a failing blower. Cold air from the vents, loud bangs on start-up, a burning smell, constant cycling, a thermostat that does not respond: each has a short list of causes, and we work through it methodically instead of guessing.
We carry parts for and repair Lennox, Carrier, Bryant, Trane, American Standard, Goodman, Amana, KeepRite, Rheem, York, Napoleon and the other makes found in Hamilton-area homes.
What furnace repair costs
A diagnostic visit in the Hamilton area is typically $99 to $149 and is credited against the repair when you go ahead. Common repairs, parts and labour: a hot-surface igniter $200 to $350, a flame sensor $150 to $250, a capacitor $150 to $250, a pressure switch $200 to $350, an inducer motor $450 to $800, a blower motor $500 to $950 (variable-speed ECM blowers run higher), and a control board $450 to $850. You see the exact number in writing before any part is fitted, and after-hours calls are quoted on the phone before anyone is dispatched.
Repair or replace: the honest answer
A rule we follow: if the furnace is under about twelve years old and the repair is less than a third of a replacement, repair it. Over fifteen years with a major failure such as a cracked heat exchanger or a failed control board, replacement is almost always the better money. We will give you both numbers and let you decide; the reasoning is set out in repair or replace? and in how long a furnace lasts.
A cracked heat exchanger is the one fault we will not leave running. It can allow combustion gases, including carbon monoxide, into the air the furnace circulates through the house.
How a repair visit goes
We confirm the symptom with you, test rather than assume, and show you what we found. You get a written price for the repair before we start. We carry the common parts, igniters, flame sensors, capacitors, pressure switches and many control boards, on the truck, so most repairs are finished the same visit. Everything we install is covered by a parts and labour warranty. If the heat is out overnight or on a holiday, the emergency line is answered around the clock.
